A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is a bank account specifically for student visa applicants. You deposit the full year's minimum living cost upfront. The German Embassy confirms the funds exist. Once you arrive in Germany, you can withdraw a fixed monthly amount (currently €934/month). It is mandatory for most Pakistani students applying for a German student visa.
How much do you need to deposit?
For 2024–25: €11,208 total (€934 × 12 months). This amount is set by the German government and updated periodically.
Which provider to use
- Deutsche Bank Sperrkonto — traditional option; requires going through a German bank partner. Slower to open but widely accepted.
- Fintiba — online, Pakistan-accessible, takes approximately 5–7 business days. Recommended for most Pakistani applicants.
- Coracle — similar to Fintiba, online process, recognised by German embassies.
Step-by-step process (Fintiba)
- Go to fintiba.com and click "Open Blocked Account"
- Complete identity verification (passport, selfie)
- Receive your IBAN and transfer instructions
- Transfer €11,208 from a Pakistani bank via international wire transfer
- Wait 5–7 days for confirmation
- Download your Fintiba certificate — this goes into your visa application
