Get application support

Unlike in Pakistan or many other countries, PhD positions in Europe are typically salaried employment contracts, not fee-paying programs. This is one of the least-understood opportunities available to Pakistani students. A fully funded European PhD means you are paid a salary to do research — there is no tuition fee and no family sponsorship required.

Eligibility criteria

  • Master's degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field
  • Strong research background or relevant thesis
  • Language proficiency: English for most Italian and German positions; French for France
  • An initial contact or acceptance from a potential supervisor (in most cases)
  • Academic publications or conference presentations are a strong advantage, not a requirement

How to apply — step by step

  1. 1 Identify your research niche: be specific, not general ("machine learning for climate modelling in Italian agriculture" not "AI")
  2. 2 Search for supervisors on Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and university faculty pages
  3. 3 Draft a cold email: 4–5 short paragraphs — who you are, why them specifically, what you want to work on, your relevant background, a polite ask
  4. 4 Monitor PhD calls: CINECA (Italian PhDs), EURAXESS (Europe-wide), DAAD (Germany), ABG (France)
  5. 5 Apply for any relevant scholarship that wraps around the PhD salary (MAECI, DAAD, SFERE)
  6. 6 If invited to interview: prepare your research pitch (10-min presentation), know the supervisor's recent papers inside-out
