Erasmus Mundus: Is It Worth Applying? An Honest Assessment

Erasmus Mundus is worth applying to — for the right candidates. The scholarship is fully funded (€1,400–1,700/month), the programmes are academically excellent, and the network you build across multiple European countries is genuinely valuable. But the competition is fierce and the application requires significant investment.

The honest numbers

Acceptance rates for Erasmus Mundus scholarships are typically 2–5% across all applicants. Some programmes receive over 2,000 applications for 20–25 scholarship places. You are competing globally — not just with Pakistani students.

Who has a realistic chance

Strong Erasmus Mundus applicants typically have: a CGPA above 3.5/4.0 (or equivalent top 10% of cohort), relevant research or professional experience, IELTS 7.0+, a clear and specific research motivation tied to the programme's thematic focus, and strong references from academics who know their work.

The biggest mistake

Sending the same motivation letter to 8 programmes. Each Erasmus Mundus programme has a distinct thematic focus, consortium structure, and career trajectory. A generic motivation letter immediately signals to evaluators that you do not actually understand what makes their programme specific. Write a tailored letter for each programme you apply to.
