The Italian student visa (visto per studio) requires approximately 10–15 documents. The specific list varies slightly depending on the consulate, your program, and your financial proof method — but the core requirements are consistent. Missing one item means your application is rejected and you lose your appointment slot.

The core document checklist

  1. Valid passport — valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended stay, with at least 2 blank pages
  2. Visa application form — completed online via the VFS portal and printed
  3. Recent passport-sized photos — 2 photos, white background, 35×45mm, recent (within 6 months)
  4. University acceptance letter — official letter from your Italian university confirming enrollment or conditional acceptance
  5. Proof of financial means — bank statement showing minimum €5,888 (as of 2024–25) OR a signed sponsorship declaration from a guarantor
  6. Proof of accommodation — university dormitory confirmation OR a signed rental contract for the first period of stay
  7. Travel health insurance — covering the entire Schengen area, minimum €30,000 coverage, valid from your entry date
  8. Proof of payment of visa fee — approximately €50 (confirm current amount with VFS)
  9. Proof of return travel OR financial means to return
  10. MAECI enrollment confirmation (if applicable) — if you hold an Italian government scholarship, this replaces financial proof

The most common rejection reasons

Bank statement issues: the statement must be in English or Italian, officially stamped by the bank, and showing a consistent balance — not a sudden large deposit made the week before your appointment.
